Janet Spink

Janet works with natural fabrics like wool and silk and prefers to knit, sew, felt and dye them.

She creates unique hand knitted socks, scarves and hats, children’s toys, shibori- dyed scarfs, clothing from recycled clothing and quilted bags.

Janet believes that textiles communicate symbolically through colour association and pattern and is inspired by a quote from Dr Canavan:

Cloth greets us on arrival into the world and shrouds us when we leave; in between it carries multiple personal meanings and associations throughout our lives.

Janet trained as a social worker and worked as a clinician and academic researcher for many years, but she has always had a love of creating and has worked with textiles and wool from the age of five. After retiring she trained as a textile artist at Box Hill TAFE. She has shown her wearable art at several exhibitions and exhibits every year at the Alcove Art Shop exhibitions at Box Hill Community Arts Centre.
